Contact Framework

How the Initiative is approached.

The Initiative does not operate a public intake. Inquiries are received through our member societies and partner institutions, which are positioned to advise on the appropriateness and readiness of a potential engagement.

For Families & Depositors

If you are the custodian of family papers, photographs, or architectural records that you wish to see preserved, we ask that you raise the matter with your local historical society in the first instance. Member societies hold the referral framework under which our acquisitions committee reviews incoming material.

This pathway is not a formality. Local societies are frequently able to arrange interim preservation, to connect depositors with descendants, and in some cases to retain materials within the community — outcomes that are often preferable to central deposit.

For Researchers

Research consultation is arranged by appointment through a member society or a partner academic library. Please be prepared to specify the collection and the scope of your inquiry; we do not accept speculative or exploratory requests.

Graduate researchers working under institutional supervision should route initial contact through their supervising faculty, who will in turn approach our partner institutions.

For Partner Institutions

Memoranda of understanding, deposit agreements, and collaborative project frameworks are administered by the Executive Director. Partner institutions may contact the Initiative directly through their standing liaison.
